Fitting my Oxygen onto my scooter
If you are using portable supplemental oxygen it may be in one of two forms – an oxygen cylinder or a portable oxygen concentrator (POC).
Oxygen cylinders and scooters
There are broadly two options for carrying your oxygen cylinder on your scooter. You can purchase a metal bracket that fits onto your scooter, see oxygen bottle holder. Alternatively you can purchase a vinyl carry bag that straps onto the back of your scooter or wheelchair. It is possible to purchase a bag that will carry up to two oxygen cylinders.
Portable oxygen concentrators and mobility scooters
The smaller POCs weigh around 2 to 2.5kg. In most cases they will fit comfortably inside the front basket of your scooter. It is important that the basket is well ventilated to allow the POC to work effectively and to prevent damaging it. Some POCs are supplied with long carry straps. If necessary these straps can often be used to suspend your POC from the steering tiller although it is recommended that you place the POC in the basket wherever possible.
The larger POCs – 4.5 to 5kg will generally fit in the basket of the larger scooters. Once again make sure that the basket allows good air flow for the POC to work effectively and safely.
